After Adrien Broner went down to Marcos Madidana this past weekend, many of his one-time supporters have turned on him! The cocky welterweight fighter that many thought was going to be the next Floyd Mayweather did not show that potential in his fight on Saturday.

Many have shown support for Broner in his time of need, including Money Mayweather who tweeted his support to Broner after the loss. One Mayweather didn’t hold his tongue when asked about the Broner/Madidana fight.

Floyd Jr.’s uncle, Roger Mayweather had no qualms in letting the world know that maybe we put Broner on a pedestal too soon.

Screen Shot 2013-12-12 at 2.17.38 PM

This mans rant against the New York Knicks is by far one of the most passionate things I have seen in a long time. New York Knicks have let him down in more ways than one and with so much talent on the team he just does not understand what the hell is the problem. C’mon Knicks, in an effort to get this supporter back I’m going to need you guys to win 5 games back to back lol

Fresh Sports: @KobeBryant’s Return: Rust And Hope In Abundance

la_a_bryant_b1_576x324

LOS ANGELES — For most of the day, Kobe Bryant was quiet. The magnitude of what he was about to do, after everything he’d been through these past eight months, was too big to be thinking about in the hours before the game.

He just needed to stay centered. Focus on the Toronto Raptors or on finding his shot and feelings his legs beneath him again. Just put the jersey on again like he has for every other game in his 18 NBA seasons. Play the game, table the emotion.

But in the final few moments before tipoff, as Bryant stood near midcourt and awaited his first game action since rupturing his Achilles tendon on April 12, it all caught up to him. The emotion, the fear, the hard work, the gratitude, the appreciation for the game that many thought he might never be able to play again.

His lip quivered. He had to steel his jaw to trap the emotion from spilling out.

“You try to control it as much as you can,” Bryant said. “But you can’t help but think of all the support and the hard work. I really, really worked my butt off this entire summer to try to get to this place.

And then the game started and he did what he could.

It wasn’t a vintage Bryant performance. It wasn’t even a particularly good one. He finished with nine points on 2-for-9 shooting, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and eight turnovers in 28 minutes as the Lakers lost to the Toronto Raptors 106-94.

He was decidedly rusty. He was noticeably nervous in the beginning. His passes were sloppy, his timing was off. His shot was tentative. His chemistry with his teammates was shaky.

But there was enough good stuff, enough glimpses of what might be, enough moments where he looked like he could still do the things hes always done that you came away from the night open-minded.

“I don’t feel normal at all,” Bryant said afterward. “I couldn’t wait to start watching film and criticizing every little thing. I’ll go home tonight and watch the game. But thats the exciting part. You’ve got a challenge, you’ve got some improvements to make.

Fresh Sports: Grinnell’s Jack Taylor Scores 100+ Points In NCAA Basketball Game, Again [VIDEO]

Screen Shot 2013-11-18 at 11.11.08 AM

Jack Taylor has done the unthinkable. Again. The 5-10 junior guard for Grinnell who made history for scoring 138 points in a single game cracked the century mark last night as he scored 109 points to lead his team to victory against Crossroads, 173-123.

Believe it or not, 53 of those points came in the first nine minutes of the second half for the one-man wrecking crew.

Via ESPN:

Against Crossroads College, in Rochester, Minn., Taylor was 35 of 70 overall from the field while playing only 29 minutes. He made 15 of 17 foul shots.

“Just like last year, I couldn’t have done this without my teammates,” Taylor said. “I give so much credit to them. This truly was a team effort. I’m thankful for the program and the people I have playing with me.”

Taylor scored 71 points in the Pioneers’ 144-99 victory Friday in the season opener against Finlandia.

The sports pundits will be quick to point out that these exhibitions of swish happened during Division III basketball. But even Michael Jordan himself has never been reported to drop triple digits in a simple shootaround.

Fresh Sports: Ed Reed To Jets Makes Sense

Ed Reed Jets

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — A few thoughts on the New York Jets‘ decision to sign future Hall of Fame safety Ed Reed:

1. Worth the risk: Many in the league believe Reed, 35, coming off an unproductive, nine-game stint with the Houston Texans, is washed up. But if the Jets use him properly, as a complementary player in certain packages, this could work out nicely. The Jets’ pass defense is ranked 24th, and their current group of safeties has only two interceptions. Reed is one of the greatest ball hawks in NFL history. He has lost some speed, and he’s not an aggressive tackler (to put it kindly), but he has rare instincts. If he makes one big play to change a game, it could mean the difference between making the playoffs or sitting at home.

2. Malcontent? Reed turned off a lot of people last week by criticizing the Texans’ coaching staff, saying the team was “outplayed and outcoached” in a loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Could this be another Derrick Mason situation? Two years ago, Rex Ryan lobbied hard for the former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver, and he was a bad influence in the locker room; the Jets dumped him at midseason. Clearly, Ryan is sticking his neck out by acquiring Reed, but I don’t think he’ll be a malcontent. Reed and Ryan go way back — seven years together in Baltimore — and Reed respects Ryan too much to cause problems.

3. Familiarity: On the surface, it makes little sense to acquire a 35-year-old safety with seven games remaining in the season. But these are extenuating circumstances. Reed knows the system. He knows Ryan and defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman, two former Ravens assistants. He also knows safety Dawan Landry, a former Ravens teammate. In other words, there won’t be a difficult transition for Reed, who practiced Thursday and could be available to play Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Oh, by the way, the Jets play the Ravens next week. You know they’ll get Reed’s best in that game.

4. The power of Rex: When John Idzik replaced Mike Tannenbaum as the Jets’ general manager, it was assumed Ryan would lose all his power with regard to personnel decisions. Not so. Ryan wanted Reed from the moment he became available Tuesday, and he discussed it immediately with Idzik. To his credit, Idzik showed an open mind, deferring to his head coach.

5. Just win now, baby: This is by far the splashiest veteran acquisition of Idzik’s brief tenure, and it shows that the Jets — a surprising 5-4 — believe they can do some damage this season. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Well, guess what? A rebuilding team doesn’t sign an aging safety in mid-November unless it thinks it can make a serious playoff run.

Fresh Sports: Controversial Call Lifts Rockets Over The Knicks!

ny_g_camelo-anthony4_mb_400

Most Knicks fans were probably screaming at the television after Carmelo Anthony‘s apparent game-tying 3-pointer was waived off by referee Scott Foster with five seconds to play on Thursday.

But Foster says his crew got the call right.

“It was a tough call but last year we put a new rule in for these situations and how we go about them. The initial contact was before he started to turn, while his back is to the basket, and then he flings it up,” Foster said in an interview with a pool reporter. “The initial contact is way before what probably everybody else thinks. It’s a push, a slap and then another slap but we’ve already called the foul on the initial contact. Now he turns and throws it up. It’s not able to be scored that way.”

Foster added that the Rockets informed him that they were going to foul before the play. So the refs were going to call the first contact they saw.

Mike Woodson wondered why the call wasn’t reviewed, but Foster says the call is not reviewable.

“There’s nothing in the rule book — and there’s 14 triggers — that allows us to review that for continuation. The only thing we can review is whether it’s a 2 or a 3 if we’d allowed it to be a made basket,” Foster said.

Anthony was fouled at least twice by Harden, and Foster says the refs called the initial foul. Anthony then threw up a 3-pointer that appeared to tie the game at 107 with five seconds to play. But Foster waived the shot off. Anthony hit two free throws to cut the lead to one, but the Knicks could get no closer.

“My thoughts don’t mean anything at this point in time. It really doesn’t matter right now for me to say whether I thought it was a good call or not,” Anthony said.

Added Raymond Felton: “I thought it was an and-1. I thought we were going to go up by one. And I thought we were going to win the ball game. It didn’t go that way.”

Instead, the Knicks (3-5) walked off the floor with their fourth home loss. Last season, they their fourth home loss came on Jan. 7.

Fresh Look: Knicks Star Iman Shumpert Cuts Off His High-Top Fade

Image

They say all good things come to an end, and in the case of New York Knicks guard Iman Shumpert‘s epic high-top fade, it’s a wrap — at least for the 2013-14 season.

The 23-year-old star going into his third year in the NBA debuted this new look last season with rave reviews. From a marketing standpoint, it was genius and it definitely added to his defensive prominence and the overall “Knickstape” aura.

But 2014 is all business for the Knicks. It’s time to put aside all distractions and Shump has undergone the ultimate sacrifice to ensure this. With a focused and healthy Iman, watch for him to become one of the most outstanding players in the Eastern Conference this season.

Fresh Sports: Magic Johnson leaving ESPN

Magic-Johnson-9356150-1-402

Earvin “Magic” Johnson announced on Thursday that he’ll no longer be part of ESPN’s NBA coverage because of his other commitments.

Johnson, a five-time NBA champion, three-time MVP and member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, joined the network in 2008. He appeared on ESPN and ABC as a studio and game analyst.

“We appreciate Magic’s contributions and wish him well in his future endeavors,” John Wildhack, ESPN’s executive vice president, production, said in a statement. “We are in the process of determining our NBA commentator roles for the upcoming season.”

Johnson is part of the ownership group that agreed to buy the Los Angeles Dodgers in March 2012. Since retiring from basketball, he has been successful in business, investing in movie theaters, a production company and restaurants. He also has been an activist in the fight against HIV after being diagnosed with the virus in 1991.

He expanded his role on ESPN to join “NBA Countdown” in 2011.

“I love ESPN. Unfortunately, due to the nature of my schedule and other commitments, I don’t feel confident that I can continue to devote the time needed to thrive in my role,” Johnson said in a statement. “I will always feel a strong connection to the ESPN family and I enjoyed working with them very much.”

Earlier this week, ESPN announced the hiring of former 76ers coach Doug Collins as an analyst on a number of NBA shows. Collins was expected to work alongside Johnson on those shows.
