Fresh Sounds: Yamin Semali (@Yaminallday) “Senior Dues”

Yamin Semali

East Point, GA rapper/producer Yamin, formerly known as DJ AmDex, presents Senior Dues, his new album featuring Tha Dogg Pound’s Kurupt, Count Bass D, J-Live, Boog Brown, Phene, Small Eyez, Joe D and Sa-Roc as well as production from from Illastrate, Dublohskytzo, and Sam Brown. Senior Dues is the newest release on Yamin’s imprint Yen Dollar Music; previous releases include his last album Yamin (clck here to listen and click here to see the “Yamin” video). Yamin’s work as one half of Atlanta rap duo Clan Destined garnered them a 5 out of 5 rating from Creative Loafing for their album Self Titled.  Kurupt of Tha Dogg Pound appears on “Change Your Style (DF-DPG Remix)”, a new take on Yamin’s original song from his 2009 release The 7 Scrolls. Big Vision of Dungeoneze played the instrumental for Kurupt and the rest was history.  “Vision is a long-time homie who I’ve done a few songs with around the time of The 7 Scrolls release, ” says Yamin. “He showed love back when a lot of people weren’t paying attention.  This is full-circle for me to have a track with an old friend and a living legend all at the same time.” Of Senior Dues, Semali says it was “a fun experience that wouldn’t have been possible without having seen different parts of North America touring with Cyhi The Prynce, where I got to meet individuals who would influence this project and find the time to write ideas that would turn into songs on this album. I called it Senior Dues because I feel that I’ve shifted from one level of artistry to the next, where professionalism is seen in everything I do, from the art to the sound and presentation.  It’s like graduating to a higher state within the same culture.”

5 Fresh Minutes With T’Melle (@T’Melle)

T'Melle2

Atlanta has always been a breeding ground for music that has attracted natives and transplants alike. Singer/Songwriter T’Melle is one of those transplants that is lighting Atlanta all the way up!! T’Melle is everything you want a new, young artist to be. She is smart, determined, beautiful and if that is not enough, unlike the artists who need autotune, she can actually SANG! At 23, she is quickly becoming an artist to watch and we have our eyes trained on her

Tell us how you got started musically.

I was first introduced to music from my father who is a music teacher! I started singing before I started talking! Lol I guess it’s in my blood. I grew up in Philly so I started singing at church and soon joined a local girl group when I was 12.  We later got discovered by the late Lisa Left Eye and she signed us. But unfortunately that was short lived…

At one point you suffered a traumatic injury and have moved on to have a career. What challenges did you face in overcoming it and moving forward?

I faced many challenges after the accident! I broke my leg in 2 places, and broke my hip, all on the same side of my body. I’ve had 5 surgeries and 2 blood transfusions. Those challenges alone were hard especially when doctors didn’t think I would have a full recovery. Dealing with that and insecurities from my scars was also hard. But through having strong parents and GOD I got through  it. Now I can say I’m doing everything I could do before the accident. TURNUP!!!!!!   [Read more…]

5 Fresh Minutes With Gorilla Phil (@GorillaPhil)

Screen Shot 2013-08-16 at 12.49.54 PM (1)With a name like Gorilla Phi you should be ready to be about that life.  Up and coming rapper Gorilla Phil is and will gladly tell anyone he meets. Unlike many rappers who are rapping fantasies about things they may never attain, Gorilla Phil takes the approach of “real rap” focussing on his life and the moves he makes. We took a few minutes to talk to him and found out that he is a dose of complex simplicity and the best way to get to know him is to simply listen.

Tell us about your name. How did you come up with Gorilla Phil?

I don’t know really. If I remember correctly, someone called me that one day when I was out selling t-shirts at an Eritrean soccer game.  I was about my money so I was real aggressive selling the t-shirts. I had several different nicknames when I was growing up but Gorilla Phil stuck.

You are Eritrean. How do you keep that part of you prevalent in your music?

It just comes out bruh.  It’s who I am. A lot of shit I be talking about it comes out…life style, brotherhood…that’s what makes it easier to be an African in traffic …I know I have people everywhere makes it easier for me. I have brothers no matter where I go
