New Music: Chi City (@iamchicity) “First Time High”

Southside Chicago rapper Chi City presents the music video for his single “First Time High”. With over nine underground tapes bearing his name – his last being 2011′s Who Is Chi City – Chi has collaborated with Cory Gunz, Mullyman and has toured with Philadelphia Freeway, Mickey Factz, Mikey Halsted and Daytona. He was crowned Coast To Coast’s Indie Artist Next To Blow and has performed at the BET Artist Showcase and ThisIs50.com’s Independent Fridays. He has ghostwritten for B.O.B., Diggy Simmons and G.O.O.D. Music affiliates. “The idea of this record came from me wanting to show my fans that just because I don’t smoke, doesn’t mean I can’t create great records,” says Chi. “That’s like the rapper’s myth, saying that we always high when we rap. I wanted to do a record where I played the high version of me and record the song as if I was actually smoking when I wrote it. So that way everyone’s satisfied.”

The Midwest is definitely stepping its rap game up. With veterans like Kanye & Common leading the charge there is a whole new set of Emcee’s poised to etch their name in hip-hop history. One such artist is Chicago’s own Bandman Kevo. The Chi-Town Emcee has one of the hottest verses on one of the hottest songs out in the Midwest.  “Want My Money”  – ZMONEY Feat Kevo got so much attention that Twista heard the song and hopped on the remix, giving the song even more of a buzz. Fresh Sounds: Lupe Fiasco Pays Tribute to Slain 6 month old

This is a post tat for so many reasons we wish that we would never have to write but given the nature of it, we must. The ever conscious and outspoken rapper Lupe Fiasco, took to his twitter and his soundcloud to release a track in tribute to Jonylah Watkins. If you are unaware of the situation, you will know that Jonylah Watkins is the 6-month-old baby shot to death as her father changed her diaper in the back of their car in Chicago. Jonylah joins the long and unfortunate list of names of people losing their lives in Chicago.

Lupe Fiasco gives us a touching tribute to the child, writing as if she had lived to be brilliant and became a force in the world. It is deep and hauntingly beautiful, but it is  also a sad reminder of the lives we are losing and the little girl will never see. RIP Princess
