Dubai

This is really dope… I would be scared to be that high in the sky tho! Looking at this makes you realize how vast and large the world is. Few of us get to view the world from this perspective, and it just makes you want to kiss the sky!

Fresh Artist to Watch: Barak The Rapper (@Baracktherapper) (Interview)

Screen Shot 2013-11-07 at 10.50.08 AMRap is diverse. It is that diversity that makes rap music one of the most unique art forms out. Barak The Rapper is one of the contributors to the diversity. The LA rapper is making major noise with singles with his first project Skyscraper.  Talented and with an ear for atypical beats, Barak’s music is reflective of his life and the world as he sees it. He keeps it honest, and is not pretending to be a ‘hard dude from the hood.’ What is most refreshing about Barak is that his music is lyrically sound and inspiring at the same time. We took a few minutes to talk to him and find out what’s next for him.

For readers that do not know you, please tell our readers who you are?

I am a 24 year old hip hop artist originally from Tel Aviv, Israel but Los Angeles, Cali raised, since I was 9. I live and breathe Cali, it is my home and I want to be able to, in the future, be one of the first people you think of when you think of Cali. As an artist I have been recording in professional studios since I was 14, so quite some time now. I have done shows at venues such as the Key Club, El Rey Theatre, Whiskey A Go Go as well as a few Cal State Campuses.  I have released a mixtape and an EP over the past couple of years and am currently working on my next project, “Skyscrapers”.

As a new artist, being from Cali is very exciting right now. Who are your favorite West Coast artists?

Of all time I’d have to go with Tupac. Currently, or at least over the last few years it has been Game, I’m a pretty big fan of his and always have been. He’s definitely one artist I’d love to get a chance to work with in the future.

Watch “Be Someone” here:

Tell us about your first exposure to music.

First exposure…As a kid it would have to be Israeli music which I’m honestly not a big fan of nowadays. Although as far as instrumentals go, there’s definitely some sounds that can be incorporated in Hip Hop that would sound really good. As far as first exposure in America, I’d have to say the ‘Marshall Mathers LP’ by Eminem, it’s kind of hard to believe that the ‘MMLP2’ is about to drop this week, it’s been long overdue.

When did you start writing original music?

The first song lyrics I ever wrote were written when I was 11 or maybe 12. I wish I still had some of those lyrics just to see where I was at that age but unfortunately with all the moving I did as a kid I have no records of any lyrics from that time.

Do you remember the first time you went on stage? Where and what was it?

The first time I went on stage was at the Knitting factory in Hollywood. I think I was 17 at the time.

Listen to Barak’s new single “When I Grow Up”

Who are your musical influences in hip hop?

A lot of Eminem, Tupac and Nas from a lyrical standpoint. As far as overall sound I pick some stuff up from Kanye West, TI, Drake and a bit of J. Cole.

Your project is titled “Skyscraper.” Tell us the meaning behind that.

Well Skyscrapers to me represent city life, my life. They represent the view from the trains I used to take and the view from my car window when I’m on the freeway. They are immense, powerful representations of what mankind can do. We have been building skyscrapers throughout history, whether it be the pyramids or the Eiffel tower in a way they are all representations of what we can all accomplish.

Musically, who are you listening to write now?

I’ve had Nothing Was The Same by Drake in my car for the past couple of weeks, really digging that album. I like the tracks Eminem has released thus far from the MMLP2. Im always listening to old Lupe on my iPod as well as Kanye West’s older stuff. One of the new artists that has really impressed me though has been Macklemore, he’s definitely found his niche. On a side note and this one might surprise you but one of my favorite albums this year has been Mechanical Bull by Kings of Leon.

Check out ‘Take A Bow’ here:

Who are some of your dream collaborations?

I’d say: Rappers: Em, Kanye, Jay Z, Drake, J. Cole, Nas; Singers: Usher, Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Rihanna and Adele.

What are your goals for your music?

Short term goals are to get a tour going for 2014 as well as getting some good reactions to the Skyscrapers album and further spreading the word about my music and building up my fan base.

Long term goals would be to release multiple albums and build my brand up to the point where I can tour globally.
