Fresh Artist To Watch: Keem (@Keem_music) Talks About ‘The Lou’ And His Music

hakeemjoints-65

Most people would agree that St. Louis has been quite quiet musically but we have a feeling that is all about to change. While Keem is not new to the industry, his grind is unmatched by many. Having charted in 2009, many people would have eased back and waited for labels to come to them, but Keem just worked harder and now he is ready to show the world that his talent, his love for music and why no oe should sleep on his Pimerica movement.

Tell us the basic thing that makes you Keem.

Just being a well rounded educated hustler/artist from one of the roughest places in St. Louis, MO… Northside’s O’Fallon Park..

It has been slightly quiet for St. Louis artists since Nelly. How do you feel about taking your city in your back?

St. Louis has had quite a bit of commercial success since of Nelly (Chingy, Huey, Jibbs, J’Kwon) but even outside of that St. Louis has a plethora of underground talent. With me being billboard charted in 09 and maintaining a strong street/online/radio presence I’ve managed to stay one of the top artists from here, a rep I take serious and plan to show the world in due time.

Did you grow up in a musical family? Do you remember what music you grew up on?

My whole family into music.. My grandfather Clayton Love (R.I.P.) used to play piano for Ike & Tina Turner and went to do his solo thing with the whole Blues sound. My mom sings in the choir and most of our family has some type of instrument under their belt. So between my grandfather and mother, I was introduced to Blues and R&B (which is why it’s a lot of melodic hooks and rhythm patterns in my rhymes) but as a kid but hip-hop was on the rise and that’s was MY generations music yet I appreciate all forms.

When did you start writing original music?

I started writing music and around 9 years old but didn’t really start recording/performing til 12-13

Do you remember the first time you went on stage? Where and what was it?

I did a lot of shows at a young age probably round 12, but I don’t remember the exact first.

Who are your musical influences in hip hop?

Being from the Midwest we listened to everything growing up, East, West midwest and south. So they range from Jay, Eminem, Bone, T.I, Twista, Canibus, of course 2Pac and BIG. I could go on and on cause I’m a fan of the art and I respect quality hip-hop..

How do you describe your musical sound?

It’s difficult to define my music because sonically I make all type of records. I got club records, street records, stories, introspective joints. I keep it lyrical but hypnotic. Being a hustler from a gang banging block I got tales both good and bad so I just give it to you real…no gimmicks

Musically, who are you listening to write now?

Like I said I’m a fan so I’m digging the new generation…Drake, Nipsey, Kendrick are killin’ shit. It’s a lot of up and coming cats I check and I keep a rotation of my locals cats in the playlist.

Name one artist (besides yourself) from your area that you think is underrated

It’s a few, but if I gotta say one I’ll say Rockwell Knuckles. He is from the North and he bringing a whole different style with bars and just overall artistry. My young homies T-Man & B-Mac up to bat too though.. ya’ll gonna see.

What are your goals for your music?

I’m trying to be recognized as one of best to ever do it. I write and produce a little bit and I definitely want to get more into that. I’m a business man so I want to grow in that area as well. The sky is the limit and I’m on a mission.
